Homemade Bar Keepers Friend - Kitchen, Bath, and Sink Cleaner

I love the BAR KEEPERS FRIEND cleaner. But got tired of paying the price for it. I looked of directions (here) to make me some of my own and realized that I already had all the ingredients. Been Using it for about 6 months now for cleaning pots, sinks, toilet, and the shower. Love its cleaning power.

Ingredients

*Lemon Essential oil - Lemon is a powerful cleansing agent that purifies the air, disinfects surfaces, and can be used as a non-toxic cleaner throughout the home.
Instructions
  1. Pour ingredients into jar or bowl.
  2. Mix or stir until well mixed.
  3. If you want to make a shaker, put in a pint or quart mason jar (I used some cleaned out sauce jars) and poke some holes in the top (carefully) with nail and hammer.
Notes
To Use:
Lightly wet surface with water or undiluted white vinegar (for really bad messes)
Sprinkle powder on and let sit 5 minutes
Scrub with sturdy brush until clean
Rinse with water or vinegar (for really bad messes)

DIY Powdered Laundry Detergent

I decided to try some powdered laundry detergent. It is basically the same ingredients as my Liquid Detergent Recipe but concentrated. Decided that I needed to make more space in the laundry department, instead of having all these gallon jugs around. Don't get me wrong I still like my other detergent recipe (used it for 19 months). But we found we like the smell of our clothes better with this powdered detergent.

DIY Powdered Laundry Detergent

Ingredients

Directions

Thoroughly stir together for 5 minutes and enjoy the results! You can take this a step further and blend the mixture in a blender or food processor to create a powder that will dissolve easily even in cold water. (Just be sure to let the dust settle before removing the lid of your blender or food processor so you don’t inhale the fine particles.) Store in a sealed container with a small scoop.
Lemon Essential oilLemon is a powerful cleansing agent that purifies the air, disinfects surfaces, and can be used as a non-toxic cleaner throughout the home.
Purify Essential OilPurify can eliminate foul odors quickly and be an effective cleaner throughout the home. Purify contains Lemon, Lime, and Pine essential oils, known for their powerful cleaning properties, along with Siberian and Austrian Firs to purify the air and protect against environmental threats. The addition of Citronella, Melaleuca, and Cilantro give this blend an enticing aroma that’s uniquely dōTERRA and unmatched in purification properties.

To Use

Use 1/8-1/4 cup per load (depending on the size or soiled level).

DIY Liquid Laundry Detergent - Money Saving - Cloth Diapers

This is my favorite homemade laundry detergent recipe for four reasons;

1. Does not require many ingredients
2. Multi-purpose uses of the ingredients used (for other cleaning recipes, see here)
3. Money saving
4. Easy to make

I have been using this recipe for almost a year now and have had no problems with it. Use it on my cloth diapers as well.
Recipe

1/4 to 1 cup Borax
1/4 to 1 cup Baking Soda
2-4 tablespoons of Blue Dish Dawn Soap.
1 gallon of water, approximately
Essential oils (See below for options and combos) - OnGaurd blend is one that I will be using
Empty gallon juice jug (I use the Apple Juice Jugs from Costco, we first drink the juice)
Directions

Step 1: Measure out the Borax and Baking Soda. I use about 1/4 cup of each but if you need a stronger detergent add more out in Juice Jugs.
Step 2: Add about 4 cups of very hot water and then mix the ingredients together well.
Step 3: Add the remaining water to jug but have it be cold till it is not quite full.
Step 4: Add the dish soap to some water then add to jug, mix gently and add remaining water if needed. (Note: I add the ingredients in this order to prevent the dish soap from bubbling up and making it very hard to fill the Jugs.
Step 5: As you a can see I make several gallons at once (as much as I have room for). I only add the esstential oils to the gallon jug only when I start to use that jug.
Step 6: Use between 1/3 cup to 1 cup depending on the amount of cloths and the dirtiness factor. For my cloth diapers I use about a cup for a small-meduim size load.

Here is some Essential oil combos that I used, found here.
Power up your homemade laundry soap with one of the following essential oil blends. Not only will they make your clothes smell nice, but they have antibacterial, antiviral and anti fungal properties – great for killing germs while washing out dirt and grime. If you’re exceptionally sensitive, you can leave out the essential oils – you’ll still get a good laundry detergent with strong cleaning powers.
Lavender Essential Oil Blend
40 drops Lavender
30 drops Lemon
20 drops Clove
Citrus Essential Oil Blend
30 drops Grapefruit
30 drops Orange
30 drops Lemongrass
Tea Tree Essential Oil Blend
40 drops Tea Tree
30 drops Lemon OR Lemongrass
20 drops Palmarosa
This following recipe is on that I have not tried yet, but I am putting it on here to remind me to try it. It is a powdered laundry detergent.

Ingredients

1 bar (or 4.5 ounces) of shaved bar soap (a homemade laundry bar, Dr. Bronner’s, Ivory, ZOTE, or Fels-Naptha)
1 cup of borax
1 cup of washing soda
Essential Oils

Use 1 Tbsp per load (or 2-3 Tbsp for large or heavily soiled loads).

How To Make Wool Dryer Balls - Why Do It

In my effort to save money and be more environmentally friendly, I discovered that this is a thing!!! WOOL DRYER BALLS. I will tell you the things that I have learned. Information I used found mainly at this site

First, what are wool dryer balls?

They are an eco-friendly alternative to dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener.

Second, What are the benefits of using wool balls in your dryer?
  • They decrease drying time, saving you money on utility bills. (Especially helpful in the winter months!)
  • Commercial fabric softeners and dryer sheets are filled with harmful chemicals and perfumes that coat your clothing, eventually ending up on your skin. These chemicals can be especially harsh on sensitive skin. There are no chemicals in wool dryer balls!
  • Commercial dryer sheets can be costly, and are thrown away after use. Wool dryer balls can be re-used for years, saving you hundreds of dollars.
  • Commercial fabric softeners shouldn’t be used on cloth diapers. Wool dryer balls are perfect for keeping your cloth diapers soft and chemical-free.
  • Wool dryer balls won’t affect the absorbency of your towels, kitchen cloths, or cloth diapers – commercial softeners will.
  • 100% wool dryer balls increase fluffiness and reduce static as dryer loads tumble.
  • Dryer balls help to soften clothes naturally.
  • Dryer balls are made from a renewable resource.
Third, how do they work?
It’s simple. They bounce around in the dryer separating clothes, allowing more hot air to circulate through all the garments. As they tumble, the wool balls fluff your laundry, reduce wrinkles, and basically pummel the laundry to make it softer. They do so much more than a dryer sheet by pulling moisture out of your clothes so you don't have to run the dryer as long. The more dryer balls you have in a load, the shorter the drying time will be.``
Fourth, how do you make your own?
TO make yarn felted wool dryer balls go to this site for instructions.
I will show you how I made mine out of scrape wool material. LUCKLY someone gave me loads of wool material cut into 1 inch strips that was to be used for a rug project but they never got to it.

Materials

Wool cut in to 1 inch strips as long as you can get them (then sew together to make it longer)
Needle and Thread
Scissors
Panty hose
String

Instructions

Step 1: Begin by wrapping the strip of wool into a ball. Continue till you have the desired size ball. About the size of tennis ball.
Step 2: With needle and thread begin the sew the strips of wool together as shown.
Step 3: Repeat till you have 4 to 6 balls. I made 6 balls.
In picture you will see that I have a store bought wool dryer ball.
Step 4: Cut the leg off an old pair of pantyhose. Put balls into the toe of the pantyhose, tying tightly in between each one with string, or cotton/acrylic yarn. (Just don’t use wool yarn or it will felt around the pantyhose.)
Step 5: Throw the entire yarn caterpillar into the wash with towels (or a load of jeans if you used brightly colored yarn).
Step 6: Wash in a hot wash cycle with a cold water rinse cycle. Dry your yarn caterpillar with your laundry using the hottest dryer setting.
Step 7: Ready to use just throw the balls in the dryer when using. I like to add a a couple drops of Essential oils to the ball every once in a while to add extra scent to my load of laundry

Doterra essential oils that I like to add include; Peppermint, Lavender, Lemon, and Wild Orange.

Citrus essential oils, such as lemon and sweet orange, actually help boost the cleaning power of homemade detergents.
Lavender essential oil has a clean, floral, fresh scent which soothes, calms and relaxes.
Lavender is the most popular floral scent for cleaning supplies, and it is probably also one of the most popular oils for aromatherapy uses as well.
One of the reasons for this, beside its nice scent, is that lavender blends well with many other essential oils, including citruses and other florals.
Peppermint essential oil is a favorite for many people that make their own cleaning products, because of its refreshing, bright minty smell.
It blends well with several other popular essential oils for cleaning, including lavender, eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary. An added use of peppermint oil is as a natural pest deterrent.

Daily, Weekly and Monthly Cleaning Schedule

"Cleaning with kids in the house is like brushing your teeth while eating oreos."
"Instead of cleaning the house, I just turn off the lights."
"You never know what you have until you clean your house/room"

Being the month of Thanksgiving and making a more earnest effort to have and show Gratitude. Here is a shout out for my parents. THANK YOU for teaching me how to clean and clean well.
If the thought of cleaning causes you to do this. Create a schedule, it will help.
Growing up, of course, I hated it when my mom or dad would double and triple check my work for completeness. It has paid off, literally. After I served an 18 month mission for my Church, work was very hard to come by. Long story short I started cleaning houses. In doing so I discovered three things: 1) I enjoyed it (no boss, flexible hours, and peace and quiet) 2) I was good at it and 3) It pays well (I was making between $15-$22 an hour).

I have met many (including myself) that have a hard time keeping clean and organized. Having a clean home improves my spirits. Take care to not let it consume you (I have and it no fun). This routine helps me balance having a clean home and other activities.

Here is my Cleaning Routine. Later I will post on house size and what is really needed. I have used this routine for 1+ years in a 2 bedroom 2 bath house and currently 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment.
Let's get cleaning!

Daily Tasks

1. Pick Up Clothes
Put clean clothes away and dirty in laundry basket. Do before bed.
2. Tidy My Room
Whatever is tidy for you. Put things in their place. I make sure nothing is on the floor so when I get up to get the baby (in the middle of the night) no angry words come out of mouth. Do before bed.
3. Unload Dishwasher
This is my least favorite chore. Nothing is better to waking up to an unloaded dishwasher. Do before bed.
4. Tidy Bathrooms
Wipe counters if needed. And just put things away. Do before bed.
5. Tidy Baby's Room
Put toys away and such. Do before bed.
6. Weekly Task
Compete task for that day during the day. See below.
OH what joy comes from finishing cleaning.

Weekly Tasks

Monday - Laundry Day

Tuesday - Clean Bathroom
1. Once a month scrub shower and/or bathtub (i do it twice a month because my baby uses tub and I want it cleaner for him)
2. Clean Toilets
3. Clean Mirrors
4. Clean Counters

Wednesday - Clean Surfaces
1. Wipe Cupboards and Appliances
2. Dust Master Bedroom Furniture
3. Dust Family Room
4. Dust baby's room
5. Dust Window Seals
6. Once a month or every other wipe inside of fridge.

Thursday - Clean Floors
1. Sweep or vacuum entire house
2. Mop Kitchen
3. Alternate mopping other rooms with hardwood floors i.e. (Master bedroom and bathroom) and (Baby bedroom, bathroom, and family room)
4. Once a Month Clean Corners and Baseboards

Friday - Organize Something
Whatever you want to do. Pick something small. A kitchen drawer, a cupboards, a closet shelf, sewing supplies, etc. No more than 20 min.

Saturday - Monthly Task
This is only one Saturday a month

Here is link to my post on DIY Non-Toxic Household Cleaners (All-Purpose, Window, Dusting, Air Freshener). click to redirect.

Monthly Tasks

Pick one from the list

Wash walls - and use touch up paint where necessary
Clean out drawers and closets - donate usable clothing and items to charity
Clean and organize the garage and or basement
Wash duvets, blankets, comforters, spreads, pillows
Organize the pantry and kitchen cabinets - throw out expired food or plan meals to use soon to expire items
Wash windows - (inside and out) and screens
Deep-clean Floors/Rugs
Clean all the hard-to-reach places - behind the stove, refrigerator, washer/ dryer, sofas
Clean medicine cabinets - throw away expired medications
Clean and organize personal files
Defrost and clean freezer, stove, oven
You will find that at first it will take up a bit of time to clean all this, but by the second week it will be a lot easier and the third it will be a breeze. Why is this?

The more dirt and scum build up the more elbow grease will be needed in the beginning. Another is that you will develop your own way of cleaning and just like anything else you will get quicker and better at it. And lastly, as you keep it up you will only be dealing with a week of dirt, so cleaning time will go faster. Also I skip some cleaning tasks some weeks depending my time and/or if its not dirty.

Having a day to clean one thing helps me not get overwhelmed and consumed. Before my baby was born and a bit after I did all the cleaning in one or two days. This made it so I did not have to worry about cleaning the rest of the week. I hope you find this helpful.

Love this article and this one that explains why we should make an effort on keeping a clean house. Note I am not perfect nor is anyone else. I am not trying to shame others but encourage (including myself).
